First Ever Wolverine Captured
and
Satellite Radio-Collared in Ontario, Canada

For Immediate Release:

For the first time in Ontario, Canada, history, a wolverine has been captured, radio-collared and then released in the bush between Ear Falls and Red Lake.

A young female (F01) weighing about nine and a half kilograms was caught in a log live-trap on December 14, 2003. The Red Lake area is the most easterly home of wolverine in North America. Wolverines have been collared in the Yukon, British Columbia and the NWT/Nunavut.

The satellite radio-collar will provide information about the home range, movements, habitat selection and residency status of wolverines in low-level elevation boreal forests.

Ontario's wolverine population is listed as "Special Concern" by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC), which means it's sensitive to human activity or natural events.

The Living Legacy Trust Boreal Wolverine Project is a partnership of The Wolverine Foundation Inc., Wildlife Conservation Society, and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR).
